Soil Quality - The Colour Test

 

A huge number of people in the Global South are subsistence farmers. They farm small plots of land in order for themselves and their families to survive.

 

Obviously, the best crop yields come from good quality soil. The majority of soil nutrients, essential to crop health, are in the top layers. Fungi and microbes within soil break down organic matter and extract the nutrients and minerals, making them available to plants. However, damage caused by rain and wind can remove these rich layers by eroding the soil.
